<p>Roughly three-fourths of the U.S. population has a debit card. In contrast to credit cards, most consumers typically have just one debit card, placing it by default at ‘top of wallet’ for debit. Slightly more than one-third of debit cardholders keep larger balances in their accounts than they would otherwise due to the active use of their debit cards. Debit cards often result in higher purchase amounts, so you can increase profit by offering debit card acceptance. </p>
<p>The number of consumers using a PIN debit had its highest growth in 2007, up 12.5% from 2006 and is now almost equal in size to people using cash.*</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>They say the customer is always right, and that’s a good philosophy for running a successful business, but when you find that too many customers are reversing the charges on their credit card (chargebacks), you have to do your part to reduce them. Luckily, there are many things you can do. For each chargeback, you pay a fee, plus if you get too many, your processing account could be closed. There are several reasons transactions can be disputed and returned but most chargebacks occur as a result of fraud. If you can reduce fraudulent transactions, you’ll have fewer chargebacks.</p>
<p>When the card is presented to you, check the expiration date and signature panel. If there’s no signature, check the customer’s ID and ask the customer to sign the card. If the customer refuses, don’t accept the card. Always get an authorization of every transaction by swiping the card through your terminal. If the card won’t swipe, follow manual key procedures and get a card imprint. Be sure to match the name on the account number of the card to the information on the receipt and match the printed four-digit number to the embossed number on the card. And of course, always get a signature.  Finally, look for the hologram. It will be on the front or back of the card and should reflect light and appear to move.</p>
<p>When the card is not present, always obtain an authorization. Ask the customer for the expiration date and include it in your authorization request along with the three-digit security code. According to Visa®, verifying the card code can reduce chargebacks significantly. It’s also a good idea to use the Address Verification System (AVS) that is a nationwide system that verifies the identity of the person claiming to own the card. It makes sure the address entered on the order form matches the cardholder’s billing address. By the way, not using the AVS will result in higher processing fees. Scrutinize orders from foreign countries extra carefully as AVS is not global.</p>
<p>If an order doesn’t seem quite right, call or e-mail the customer to verify that he or she placed it. If your business delivers products, use a carrier that requires a signature upon delivery. Be cautious when accepting orders from customers who use free e-mail addresses like Yahoo or Hotmail. Tracking them is almost impossible.</p>
<p>Finally, make sure you respond quickly to every customer service request.  If customers think they are being ignored, they will call their credit card company, which will result in a chargeback.</p>

<p>The first thing you should know is that there are a series of what are called interchange levels which affect the cost of a charge at every stage, depending on a number of factors—including the type of card presented, specific information contained in the transaction and how and when the transaction is processed. Here are a few tips on how you can prevent being assessed higher processing fees:<br />
1. Swipe the card, key-entered transactions are charged at higher rates<br />
2. Obtain a valid authorization from the terminal or register<br />
3. Provide all original electronic authorization information at the time of settlement<br />
4. Settle transactions daily<br />
5. If you are key-entering often, clean your terminal’s magnetic-stripe reader<br />
6. For card-not-present transactions, ask the customer for the card expiration date and include it in the authorization request<br />
7.  Use fraud prevention tools such as Address Verification Service</p>
<p>Reducing chargebacks is another way to save money. A chargeback is a reversal of a payment card transaction that usually occurs when a consumer files disputes with their bank or card provider. Following these tips can help you reduce chargebacks:<br />
1. Keep copies of your sales transactions and respond to retrieval requests by sending sales draft copies immediately<br />
2. To avoid duplicate processing, reconcile your batches daily and ensure that the register/terminal totals match daily receipts<br />
3.  A timely sales slip submission, along with a written explanation of the validity of the charge, will be needed to try to reverse a chargeback when a customer denies making or authorizing a transaction<br />
4. To be valid, the sales slip must include both a cardholder signature and the card account obtained directly from an imprint of the card itself or from electronically reading the magnetic stripe<br />
5. Upon swiping a card, if the card number does not match the number embossed on the face of the card, ask for a different form of payment<br />
6. Credits must be processed correctly and on time<br />
7. Authorize all transactions, and accurately record the approval code on the sales slip<br />
8. Never process a transaction on a card prior to, or after, the valid date<br />
9. Sales transactions must not be processed prior to delivery of the product purchased. Proof of delivery, signed by the cardholder, should be obtained for every credit card transaction in which the merchandise or service is not delivered immediately at the point-of-sale<br />
10. Ensure that your customers are aware of your return policy at the time of purchase. Stick to your policy. Display the policy at the point-of-sale and print it on your sales slips, directly above the cardholder signature</p>
<p>Preventing fraud is one more way you can keep costs down. Here are some telltale signs that can tip you off to potential fraud. Watch for customers who; purchase a large amount of merchandise without regard to size, style, color or price; don’t ask questions on major purchases; try to distract or rush you during the sale; make purchases and leave the store but then return to make additional purchases; make large purchases just after the business has opened or as it is closing and refuse free delivery for large items. It is also recommended that you keep your terminals up to date to avoid any compliance issues. All devices in First Data’s FD line of payment solutions use PA-DSS compliant applications.
